James B. Gibson, MD, PhD
Dr. James Gibson is a board-certified clinical biochemical geneticist practicing at Specially for Children, the pediatric subspecialist group serving Austin and the communities surrounding Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas. His medical degree is from Duke University School of Medicine and his Ph.D. (in anatomy and genetics) is from the Graduate School of Duke University. He completed his pediatric training at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and a metabolism fellowship at the same institution. He has held faculty positions at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, and most recently at the University of Texas for Health Sciences at San Antonio.
His professional interests are the detection and treatment of inborn errors of metabolism in all ages of patients. He has directed a metabolic testing laboratory and was responsible for the interpretation of those test results. He has been a consultant to the state newborn screening program in Arkansas and Texas. Because of the scarcity of biochemical geneticists, he has been responsible for all metabolic patients in a geographic area equivalent to a quarter of Texas.
Dr. Gibson has published over thirty peer-reviewed articles on the basic science, clinical detection and management of genetic diseases. Research involvement has included birth defects epidemiology as well as cellular physiology of galactosemia. He has authored six book chapters on disorders of carbohydrate metabolism and inborn errors affecting the liver. Teaching responsibilities over the last 20 years have included: medical students--as a lecturer and course director, residents, fellows, and advanced practice nurses. He has won several institutional awards for teaching. Dr. Gibson lectures frequently at regional and national meetings about clinical approaches to diagnosis and management of metabolic disorders.
